Eden Gardens State Park in Santa Rosa Beach is one of those places that feels completely different from the coast just a few miles away. Moss-draped live oaks and spacious manicured lawns give Eden its Southern charm. You’ll also find ornamental gardens, waterfront views and the historic Wesley House. It’s an incredible amount of variety in one location.

When most people picture an engagement session on Florida’s Emerald Coast, white sand and blue water probably come to mind. But here’s the thing—not everyone who lives in Florida loves the beach. And you don’t have to step foot in the sand to have a beautiful, distinctly Florida backdrop.

Makinlee and Drew joined me at Eden Gardens for their August engagement session. We started in the early evening and photographed through sunset. They’re planning a Florida beach wedding in May 2027 followed by a reception celebration in Tennessee—but for their engagement photos, we traded the sand for the gardens.

And Eden gave us plenty to work with.

Why I Love Eden Gardens for Engagement Photos

One of my favorite things about Eden Gardens is the variety. We can create completely different looks without getting back in the car or traveling to another location.

A few minutes later, you’re standing beside the stately white columns of the Wesley House or tucked into the greenery of one of the gardens. Continue toward the water and the backdrop changes all over again.

That variety is especially helpful if you want your engagement gallery to feel like more than one look repeated 30 different ways.

Eden Gardens State Park encompasses 163 acres of the historic Wesley homestead. At its center sits the two-story Wesley House, surrounded by moss-draped live oaks and ornamental gardens. Tucker Bayou borders the property and gives us another beautiful backdrop. The park’s gardens include a heritage rose garden, butterfly garden, secret garden, reflection pond, camellias and azaleas.

Southern Charm Without the Sand

If you’re drawn to the Emerald Coast but aren’t necessarily a beach person, this is where Eden Gardens really shines.

You still get the softness and natural beauty that make Northwest Florida special. There are even beautiful waterfront views—just without the sandy feet, dunes or an entirely beach-focused gallery.

The Wesley House adds something completely different. Its white columns and wrap-around porch create a timeless Southern backdrop. Rocking chairs and architectural details also lend themselves to quieter, more relaxed photographs.

Then step away from the house and you’re surrounded by greenery.

That’s what makes Eden such a great engagement location: it doesn’t feel like you’re trying to make one backdrop do everything.

Those Gorgeous Live Oaks

The trees deserve their own moment.

Some of my favorite areas of Eden Gardens are beneath the huge live oaks. Spanish moss drifts from their branches and creates a beautiful canopy overhead. It feels romantic and distinctly Southern. These trees also give photographs a sense of scale that you simply can’t get from a close portrait.

And that’s something I always want from a location: somewhere beautiful enough to complement the people I’m photographing without overpowering them.

An August Evening at Eden Gardens

We photographed Makinlee and Drew’s engagement session on an August evening, beginning in the early evening and continuing toward sunset.

Summer in Northwest Florida means expecting warmth and humidity, but Eden offers something our beaches don’t have much of: trees and shade.

The shaded gardens, open lawn and waterfront gave us plenty of options. As the light changed, we simply moved to another part of the property. Instead of staying planted in one spot waiting for the perfect light, we could move around the property and use different areas as the sun became softer.

Their light blue and white wardrobe also worked beautifully here. Against all of that greenery, the softer colors kept the photographs light and romantic without competing with the landscape.

More Than Just Engagement Photos

Although I love Eden Gardens for engagement sessions, it’s a location I’d consider for couples, maternity, family and senior portraits as well.

The biggest reason is variety.

If you love greenery and nature, we have it.

If you want something more polished and architectural, we have the Wesley House.

If you want open space and movement, there are expansive lawns.

If you want water without having a beach session, we can head toward Tucker Bayou.

And depending on the season, the gardens themselves change. Camellias and azaleas provide seasonal color from roughly October through May, with peak blooming around March, according to Florida State Parks.

It’s one location with several very different personalities.

What to Know Before Planning Photos at Eden Gardens

Eden Gardens State Park is located at 181 Eden Gardens Road in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, in the Point Washington area between Destin and Panama City Beach.

The park is currently open from 8 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year, which makes sunset session timing particularly important. Standard admission is currently $4 per vehicle, with a limit of eight people per vehicle.

Photography is generally permitted in Florida State Parks without an additional photography fee. Sessions can’t interfere with normal park operations or resources. A permit may be required for photography that disrupts regular visitor access or park operations. Policies and fees can change, so I always recommend checking current park requirements before your session.

Is Eden Gardens Right for Your Engagement Session?

I’d recommend Eden Gardens if you’re looking for engagement photos that feel romantic, relaxed, Southern and natural—but you don’t necessarily want another beach session.

It’s particularly beautiful for couples who love:

• Greenery and mature trees
• Southern architecture
• Gardens and natural surroundings
• Open space and movement
• Waterfront scenery without sand
• A gallery with several different looks

Makinlee and Drew’s session is a perfect example of why I love photographing here. We walked, danced, cuddled and explored. They could simply enjoy each other while the scenery changed around us.

Their wedding story will eventually take them to the Florida beach and then Tennessee.

But this chapter?

It belongs beneath the live oaks at Eden.
